Reading Mark 9:14-29

Reading Mark 9, I came across Jesus' statement "If you can'! All things are possible for one who believes." This truth is a response to "someone from the crowd" whose son was possessed by a demon. This father says, "If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us." Jesus repeats the father's words, "If you can!" It is God saying "I can do anything, nothing is impossible with Me. How dare you doubt me?" Doubt does not belong, but it is there in the father. And even as it was there in that father, it is here in me. I know and hear it in the morning, afternoon, and evening. I am part of a "faithless generation." How then can we do impossible things? We don't. God still does. In verse 29 Jesus says "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer," and perhaps, this is a call for all who doubt: Pray to God. Still, our prayers yield no power except the powerful One listens and acts. And God still does the impossible, and we have hope.
