The Challenge - "Let Us Run"

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. - Hebrews 12:1

Knowing his readers are going through trials and difficult times, the author of Hebrews in the beginning of chapter 12 encourages them to run. The word used is the word we get "agony" from. He tells them to agonize in this race. The race: a track for those who have experienced the life-giving power of the Gospel. And it is "set before us!" They do not run aimlessly or without purpose. Hope - "Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen" (emphasis added). He says, "RUN!" It's emphatic and assumes effort. If they were anything like me, this admonition was not easy or taken well. I don't like running; its hard. Still, no question that sometimes the Christian life is hard, and God calls us to obedience through perseverance and commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is this race that we run as well. The challenge is one of endurance ("with endurance")! Its not a sprint, but a marathon. Will they listen? Will we listen to the admonishment or challenge to run? Run by faith.
